Chapter 16

South Bend, Indiana

They stayed in Detroit, just long enough to visit the probation office and then hit the road again. The word on the street was that 40 Grand had a contract on their heads. Toya was the only one in the clear, since her business didn’t interfere with Hammer or 40 Grand. But she didn’t feel safe in the city without Stink and JT, so when they gave her the word that they were headed to Indiana, she put a safe at her Aunt Keisha’s house and hit the road.

Big Pooh had extended his hand and invited them to join him in a new spot that Detroit hustlers had found and flocked to in recent years. South Bend was crawling with gang bangers—CVL’s, G’s, Latin Counts and smaller organizations. Big Pooh wasn’t offering any piece of his pie, just access to the city. He already has his camp, The Mack Boys, eating off his plate.

After feeling out South Bend for a few weeks, Stink rented a house in the slums and brought in his little brother, Rob, and his crew to run things. From day one, Stink and Rob didn’t get along in a business relationship. Rob was just a fuck up in Stink’s eyes, but if you asked Rob, Stink was an arrogant muthafucka who didn’t realize that he wasn’t a kid anymore.

Stink parked his Benz 430 on 20s at the Steak ‘n Shake next to Big Pooh’s Suburban. The Steak ‘n Shake was a spot where a lot of the up and coming hustlers hung out. Big Pooh and Stink were there for two reasons. One was to get to know some names and faces. The other was to get familiar with enough South Bend niggas to see who was holding some real cash. By now, Stink had come to the realization that a Gank was always better than a grind.

Stink spotted the table with two dudes wearing Detroit Tigers fitted caps and strolled over. “What up, doe?” Stink said to Big Pooh and his partner.

“What up doe?” they returned.

Stink was about to sit across from Big Pooh, but he stopped Stink before he could have a seat. “Aye homey, why don’t you sit over there so Stink can sit on this side?”

They swapped seats, and Stink sat next to Big Pooh, scanning the room. He saw some familiar faces, but no one he knew by name. Big Pooh began whispering names and backgrounds of everyone in his ear. The Indiana cats had taken a liking to Big Pooh, so he knew most of the who’s who around town. Those that didn’t like him had learned to accept his presence.

“What up, Big Pooh?” A young native said as he walked by.

“You got the best hand, nigga.” Big Pooh returned. They slapped fives and the youngster kept it moving. Big Pooh knew what Stink was thinking already.

“That’s Nate, he ain’t working with shit,” he said before Stink could ask.

A chubby, caramel skinned chick came in, and all heads turned in her direction.
